Many Americans are being placed in an incredibly difficult position due to the price of prescription drugs in the United States. Because of this, Americans are turning to one of the only safe solutions available to them, importing their medication from Canada. This is a very contentious issue between the pharmaceutical companies, politicians, regulators and the public.

There are very good arguments for both sides but what is at risk during this controversy is the health and lives of millions of Americans.

It’s well documented. Americans pay the highest prices for prescription drugs in the world. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for the elderly and/or those without prescription drug coverage to afford their medications.

The U.S. Government and FDA have recognized the problem of access to affordable drugs and in the early 1980's, established a personal importation policy. The purpose of this policy was to allow American patients to import medications on a compassionate basis. The policy gives FDA's personnel the discretion to allow medications that are clearly for personal use to be imported so long as they do not represent an unreasonable risk to the user. FDA personnel must determine whether a package contains a commercial shipment of medication or whether the medications have been purchased for personal use. A shipment containing a three-month supply of medications has been determined to be for personal use. While the policy does not change the law, it has been applied to allow American patients to have access to safe prescription medications from Canada.

We believe we are in the fortunate position to help provide an interim solution as we work with the governments, consumer associations and industry groups to find a permanent solution.
